Apple Daily: Increased AppleCare+ Costs; Smaller Battery in iPhone 6s; iOS 9.1 Beta

Apple's big special event is over, and now some of the details that Tim Cook and friends didn't share on stage are starting to make their way out as Apple updates its websites. As of this afternoon, we now know that AppleCare+ will cost more for iPhone 6s owners, the battery for the iPhone 6s appears to be smaller than that for the iPhone 6, and the public beta for iOS 9.1 is now available.

iPhone 6s Appears to Have Smaller Battery than iPhone 6

If you happened to notice that Apple didn't say anything specific about the battery for the iPhone 6s yesterday, that's likely because Apple itself wasn't too eager to share the results. As discovered by PhoneArena, Apple's official video for the iPhone 6s appears to show a 1,715 mAh capacity battery, which is actually down from the 1,810 mAh battery found in the iPhone 6. The offending shot in question is at 2:53.

But here's the thing: Apple has already claimed on its official spec sheet that the iPhone 6s will give us 14 hours of talk time and 10 hours of LTE browsing on a single charge; the iPhone 6s Plus, on the other hand, will deliver 24 hours of talk time and 12 hours of LTE browsing. That means that the new and old generation phones appear to deliver the same results despite the 6s' smaller battery possibly owing to advances in technology — or, of course, it could turn out that Apple gave us the wrong information. For now, we'll just have to wait until we can get our hands on the phones to learn for ourselves.

AppleCare+ More Expensive for iPhone 6s Users

If you plan on buying an iPhone 6s or 6s Plus, be prepared to spend a little more money for AppleCare+. Apple updated its websiterecently to show that the service will cost $129.99 for both new phones, and that service fees under the plan have also been bumped up to $79 for the iPhone 6s and $99 for the iPhone 6s Plus.

Apple didn't provide any reasons for the boost, but it seems likely that it's meant to account for the technology involved, which in some cases is substantially better than what we saw in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Keep in mind, though, that Apple also now offers the iPhone Upgrade Program, which includes the price of AppleCare+ in the monthly payment installments at the heart of the plan.

iOS 9.1 Public Beta with iPad Pro Features Now Available

iOS 9 won't officially be out until next week, but the public beta is already here for iOS 9.1, which includes features designed specifically for the iPad Pro (although, of course, the device and compatible accessories aren't). Most notable among these features is support for the iPad Pro's associated accessories, such as the Apple Pencil and the Smart Keyboard announced at yesterday's event.

If you don't have access and would like to, just sign up for Apple's beta program here. Keep in mind, though, that these are betas and thus prone to instability by their very definition.
